Licensing Challenges and Extortion Practices Affecting Women-Owned Small Businesses ?? ""
Abuse of influence and extortion practices that may occur under the guise of legal procedures can pose significant challenges to the sustainability and growth of women-owned small businesses. Such practices can drain business resources and capital, place additional psychological pressure on women business owners, disrupt their operations, and potentially damage their reputation, particularly when they occur in front of customers or within the surrounding business environment.
From a legal and administrative perspective, small businesses may, depending on the nature of their activities, be subject to licensing requirements and procedures involving up to seven different authorities. This can expose women business owners to repeated demands and procedures, some of which may be legitimate while others may fall outside established legal frameworks.
Available findings also indicate that some women small-business owners hesitate to formally register their businesses or establish dedicated business premises. Concerns about dealing with relevant authorities and administrative procedures are among the factors influencing these decisions.
These challenges can hinder the sustainability, growth, and development of women-owned businesses, highlighting the importance of simplifying procedures, strengthening transparency and accountability, increasing awareness of legal rights and requirements, and providing safe and effective mechanisms for complaints and access to legal support.
Have you experienced similar challenges? What solutions do you think could help address these issues and support the sustainability of women-owned businesses?
